Founded in 2005, the annual Catalyst Awards recognize and honor innovation and excellence in the Blackboard global community of practice, where millions of educators and learners work every day to redefine what is possible when leveraging technology. Winners are selected by a cross-functional team of Blackboard experts.

Located on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, the Davidson Academy was founded in 2006 as the first public school of its kind in the nation for profoundly gifted (high IQ) students. Since its inception, students from across the country have moved to Reno to attend. With the opening of Davidson Academy’s online campus in 2017, families unable to move to Reno can now access an appropriately challenging education for their student(s) through an innovative online model. Leveraging the power of Blackboard to deliver course content allows Davidson Academy Online to use live session class time to foster meaningful interaction.

“Earning a Blackboard Learn Catalyst Award in the Teaching and Learning category is recognition of the hard work the Davidson Academy team has put into designing a new model of online learning,” said Stacy Hawthorne, Davidson Academy’s Director of Online Learning. “With an online education, gifted students have the opportunity to enroll in classes they may not be able to take locally, while accessing a social network of intellectual, same-age peers. We are thankful for the support Blackboard has provided to help create a quality learning experience for our students.”

“I’m proud to recognize this year’s Catalyst Award winners for their dedication to using technology to enhance the learning experience and sharing their best practices with the larger community,” said Bill Ballhaus, Chairman, CEO and President of Blackboard. “We look forward to continuing to partner with the winners and their institutions to support learner success.”

The Davidson Academy team will be honored alongside other Blackboard Catalyst Award winners during BbWorld 2018, Blackboard’s annual user conference to be held July 16-19 in Orlando.
