Advanced Spanish II

Course Overview

This course is designed as a continuation of Advanced Spanish I. During this course, the students will continue putting into practice all the grammatical structures learned in previous Spanish classes with the purpose of applying them in a more communicative way. The students will acquire a greater proficiency in the Spanish language and understanding and social awareness of different Spanish speaking cultures. They will continue to analyze and compare cultural information, understand more complex texts, write more developed, fully organized compositions incorporating all grammatical structures successfully. In each Unit, there will be a specific emphasis on using certain grammar structures, but students will continue applying the grammar they know. The students will continue to engage in conversations and control the language to interact in conversations with monolingual Spanish speakers. They will continue to analyze current issues and important topics during class discussions and debates, as well as, continue the cultural written exchanges with students from another Spanish speaking country. At the end of this course, the student will have gained all the required modes of communication to fully communicate in Spanish within different settings.

Course Content

Unit 4

During this unit, the students will use more new words to talk about things people do in their free time, about obligations, and how to describe their feelings when practicing these activities. The students will continue using all the grammar structures reviewed in the previous units. The main grammar structures used will be “gustar” and similar verbs to talk about things they like and dislike.  In the cultural section, they will learn cultural information about places in the southern countries of South America, like Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, watch cultural videos, and read information about their artists and music.

Unit 5

In this unit, the students will learn vocabulary to talk about current social issues, activism and the news. The main grammar structures will be the past subjunctive and conditional to talk about hypothetical situations. The students will continue using the previous grammar points learned with greater emphasis on the grammar structures in this unit. For the cultural section, the students will learn cultural information about Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia, and their indigenous communities.

Unit 6

In this unit, the students will use vocabulary to talk about and describe future situations, the environment, technology, and environmental social responsibility. The main grammar structure used will be the future tense, but the students will continue using previously learned grammar structures. They will learn cultural information about Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and some of their artists and musicians.
