Core courses for Davidson Academy Online typically meet twice a week for 90-minute live sessions. Core classes meet Monday through Thursday while elective classes meet on Friday.
Each student’s schedule varies, but all students should expect to be in live sessions for a portion of each school day. Specifically, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Pacific Time (PT), is designated each day for student participation in live sessions, or other active learning opportunities with their classmates. Students residing on the east coast may opt to complete their collaboration times earlier in the day instead of late in the afternoon.
Classes meet synchronously using video conferencing software, while at other times times students work on asynchronous learning activities, such as reading, drafting essays, completing practice problems, etc. While our courses are instructor led and have traditional due dates throughout the week, students have significant control over when they work on class assignments and activities outside of the live session times.
Students collaborate with classmates and connect with teachers and advisors through office hours and individual appointments during the school day outside of regularly scheduled course hours.
Davidson Academy Online runs on the same yearlong academic calendar as the Reno school, which is based on the University of Nevada, Reno calendar.
Synchronous Live Sessions
Davidson Academy Online courses rely on synchronous live sessions where instructors and students meet online throughout the week. During live sessions, the instructor and students use real-time audio and video communication tools, including webcams, to foster deeper communications and understanding of the content. While live sessions, like our courses, are instructor-led (not self-paced) students are expected to contribute significantly during these times. We have found that students who have had experience with live, online communications that are academic in nature are more successful with our courses.
